Localの本当の意味?

There are surprisingly many English words that are widely misunderstood and therefore misused and mistranslated in Japan. One of them is local, which most Japanese seem to think means something like 田舎の or 地方の. A good example of this misconception can be found in the Readers in Council column of the Jan. 24 edition of the Japan Times, in which a writer (Japanese) complains about the concentration of doctors in big cities, saying, ". . . the number of doctors working at local hospitals has dramatically decreased." Unfortunately, local doesn't mean what he thinks it does.

驚くほど多くの英単語が日本で誤解、誤用、誤訳されています。たとえば localは「田舎の」や「地方の」と誤解されているようです。1月24日のジャパンタイムズのコラムで、日本人投稿者が「local hospitals の医者の数が減少している」と、医者が大都市へ集中していることに不満を書いていましたがlocalは「田舎の」や「地方の」という意味ではありません。

 

 

A good demonstration of what it actually means can be seen in this joke by the late Tommy Cooper, a British comedian:　I rang up my local swimming pool. I said, "Is that the local swimming pool?" The man who answered said, "That depends on where you're calling from."

localの本当の意味は、イギリス人コメディアンの故トミー・クーパーの、次のジョークからわかります。地元の(local)プールに電話して、「地元の(local)プールですか」って聞いたら、「電話をどこからかけているかによります」だって。

 

 

True, this isn't one of Tommy Cooper's best jokes, but it wouldn't be a joke at all if local meant 田舎の! What Tommy Cooper meant by"my local swimming pool" was "the swimming pool near where I live." The person answering the phone didn't know, of course, where the caller lived or where he was calling from; hence his reply.

これはトミー・クーパーの傑作ジョークではありませんが、local が「田舎の」という意味だったら、ジョークになりません。トミー・クーパーの言う「私の地元の(local)プール」とは、「私が住んでいる近くのプール」という意味です。聞かれた人は、電話の相手がどこに住み、どこからかけているかわからないので、そういう答えになったのです。

 

 

If you talk about my local XYZ, you mean the XYZ near where I live (probably the one you usually use), and it makes no difference whether you live in the center of the capital city of your country or in the smallest village: if you happen to live in Shibuya (Tokyo), your local supermarket (hospital, park, etc.) is a supermarket (hospital, park, etc.) in or near Shibuya

「 私の地元の(local)～」は「私が住んでいる近くの～」という意味です。首都の中心でも、小さな村に住んでいても関係ありません。もし渋谷に住んでいるなら、あなたの地元の(local)スーパーは渋谷のスーパーです。

 

With a possessive determiner (my, her, your, etc.) local will mean near where I, she, you live(s), but in other cases local also means belonging to or connected with a particular area (which area must be clear from the context). The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, for example, is a local government, since it only governs the people who live in Tokyo. And a custom peculiar to, say, Osaka is just as much a local custom as one that is peculiar to the remotest part of, say, Akita Prefecture.

 

・possessive determiner「所有限定詞」

・Tokyo Metropolitan Government「東京都庁」 ・peculiar「特有の」 

・say「たとえば」・remote「遠く離れた」

 

(意訳)

my, herなどの所有限定詞がlocalにつくと、local は「私が、彼女が、住んでいる近くの」という意味になりますが、local には「特定の地域に属している、関係がある」という意味もあります。どの地域かは、文脈からわかります。たとえば、東京都庁は、「特定の地域の(local)」官庁です。東京都民だけを管轄しているからです。また、大阪特有の習慣も、遠く離れた秋田特有の習慣も、どちらも「local custom」です。

 

 

Oh, and if you're wondering how you should translate inaka no, try rural! You can also use provincial if you're referring to something that belongs to an area outside the capital city.

「田舎の」と言いたいときは、ruralか、provincialを使いましょう。

ローカル…そうですよね、どうも私たちはこれを「田舎の」と解釈しがちです。私の時々利用する私鉄には快特・特急・急行・各駅停車があります。その「各駅停車」に'Local Train'とあります。でもこれは「田舎の電車」ではありません。の'Local'は'Express'(急行)に対する語です。
