大人は hang out を使おう!

動詞「play」の使い方についてのネイティブ大学教授の見解、後編です。

Well, I'm kidding about my seminar students. They aren't quite that childish. The point is that when native speakers reach our teens, we stop using "play" without an object noun. If an adult man says, "I want to play with you," he sounds silly-unless that man is the evil genius Jigsaw in the Saw movies. When he says "I want to play with you," it's terrifying.

 

◎kid「冗談を言う、からかう」 　evil genius「悪魔」 　jigsaw「糸のこぎり」 　saw「のこぎり」

 

●意訳

これは冗談で、私のゼミ生はそんなに子供っぽくありません。大事な点は母語話者は10代になったら名詞の目的語を伴わない“play”は使いません。もし大人が"I want to play with you."と言ったら変です。映画の『ソウ』シリーズの殺人鬼ジグソウが言ったのでなかったら。ジグソウが「お前と遊んでやろう」と言ったらこわいですよね。

Of course, American adults do sometimes meet our friends casually,　without specific plans for the day. But we prefer not to call such　meetings "play." In our teens, we say that we "hang out" with our　friends. Later, we use dull expressions like "meet" or "spend time　with" our friends, rather than "play with."

 

◎dull「おもしろくない」

 

●意訳

もちろんアメリカの大人も何をするか決めないで気楽に友達と会いますが“play”は使いません。10代なら友達と“hang out”(ぶらぶらする)と言います。それから友達と“meet” や“spend time with”といったおもしろくない表現を使うようになり、“play with”は使わなくなります。

The more I think about it, the more I believe that American adults　really should say "I like to play with my friends," the same as　Japanese adults do. It would make English easier for others to learn.　And maybe we would enjoy our free time more if we thought of it as　"playing"!

 

●意訳

このことを考えるにつれ、私はアメリカの大人も日本の大人のように、　"I like to play with my friends."と言えば良いのにと思うようになりました。そうすれば英語学習が簡単になりますから。そして自由時間は遊びと思えば、もっと楽しめるかもしれませんね。
