February is the time of year when birds mate, before building their nests and laying their eggs. Traditionally, February 14th. came to be known as "Birds' Wedding Day". It is also the feast of St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. One story about St. Valentine, who was a Christian martyr in ancient Rome, is that he left a message for the girl he loved on the wall of his cell, signed "From Your Valentine". His Feast Day became a day for exchanging love messages, as well as poems and simple gifts such as flowers.

Japan has its own unique version of celebrating St. Valentine's Day. Women give gifts of chocolate. They do this not only out of love, but also out of a sense of social obligation known as "giri". Japan has also invented "White Day" on 14th. March, when men reciprocate and give white chocolate or sweets.
