What will you be doing for your summer holidays?

 

One of the things that surprised me when I came to Japan forty-some years ago was the 'paucity' of summer holidays. Workers would choose to take perhaps three out of maybe ten days of paid leave. They wanted to show how hardworking they were.

 

 

In the culture where I grew up, a rest from work was supposed to be good for you, like a tonic. To refuse to take your holiday was uncooperative. It was not a good thing to do.

 

 

The original concept of "holiday" was a "holy day", a day of worship. Over time it came to be a day for spiritual refreshment, for recovering from the stresses of daily life and for having fun. As children we were told to leave our books and go outside to get some fresh air, because "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".

 

 

There came a time when Japan was internationally criticized for producing "economic animals" and "workaholics", and worse still the phenomenon of karoshi (death from overwork). The two-day weekend was introduced as well as new public holidays.

 

Does this really mean that people now have a better quality of life? Do enjoy your summer holidays!

夏休みは何をされますか?

 

40数年前日本に来たとき夏休みの足りなさに驚きました。有給休暇があるのに夏休みを3日間しかとらないことが評価されていることにびっくりしました。私の育った文化だったら、逆に「協力的ではない」と思われたでしょう。「holiday」は元々「holy day(神聖な日)」、祈りの日。 後に日頃のストレスを癒し元気を回復して楽しむ日になりました。日本人が「エコノミックアニマル」「仕事中毒(依存)」、さらには過労死だと批判されていたときもありましたが、国民の祝日は改正され週休二日制が導入されました。このことによって本当に日本人の生活は豊かに(休暇を楽しむ)なったでしょうか。
