As a teacher of English writing classes, I have seen millions of spelling mistakes in my career. Perhaps the most common mistakes are those involving "r" and "l." Some of these mistakes seem strange, such as "fleshman" for "freshman." Some are confusing:"What did you do on Sunday?" "I prayed with my friends." "Oh, really? I didn't know you were a Christian." "???"

 

●意訳

英作文の授業で非常にたくさんのスペルミスを見てきましたが、おそらく最もよくあるのはrとlの間違いでしょう。間違いの中には、  freshman を fleshman と書く変なものや、紛らわしいものもあります。紛らわしい例:「日曜は何をしましたか」「友達とお祈りしました※」「本当ですか。あなたがクリスチャンとは知りませんでした。」「???」

 

※RとLの間違い。正しくは I played with my friends.(友達と遊んだ)

Occasionally, I find a mistake that isn't really a "mistake" at all, but rather a case of accidentally brilliant English. One such case was a girl who wrote in an English essay many years ago that she hoped to become a "fright attendant" someday.

●意訳

時には間違えが偶然素晴らしい英語になっていることもあります。何年も前、ある女子学生が、いつかfright attendant(恐がる人のお世話係)になりたいと書いていました。

I wanted to correct the spelling to "flight attendant," but then I paused. Around that time there had been a sensational hijacking attempt on board an American domestic flight. A man had managed to bring a gun onto the plane. During the flight he pointed the gun at a flight attendant and demanded that the plane fly to another country. The passengers were very frightened, but flight attendant remained calm. She helped the passengers control their fright. In the end, the plane landed, the hijacker surrendered to police, and no one was injured. The flight attendant was praised for her cool attitude throughout the ordeal.

●意訳

スペルをflight attendant(客室乗務員)と直したかったのですが、やめました。その頃アメリカの国内線で世間を騒がせたハイジャックがあったからです。男が拳銃を飛行機に持ち込み、拳銃を客室乗務員に向けて違う国へ飛ぶよう要求しました。乗客はひどく恐がりましたが、乗務員は落ち着いて乗客の恐怖をやわらげてあげました。ようやく飛行機が着陸するとハイジャック犯は自首し、怪我人は出ませんでした。乗務員は、過酷な状況の中でとった冷静な態度により、賞賛されました。

Flight attendants often complain that their job is not taken seriously by most people. "We don't just smile and serve snacks," they say. They point out the extensive training that they go through to be prepared for every type of emergency.

●意訳

客室乗務員は自分たちの仕事がまじめに考えられていないとよく不満を述べます。「笑顔で軽食を出しているだけではありません」あらゆる非常事態に備えて広範囲にわたる研修を受けています。

And surely, in the case of the hijacking incident, didn't the woman really serve as a "fright attendant," attending to the fright of the passengers?
I think my student actually invented the best name for the people who perform this demanding job.

●意訳

確かにハイジャック事件で女性は乗客の恐怖の世話をしたfright attendant (恐がる人のお世話係)ではなかったでしょうか。学生は、過酷な仕事をする人に最もふさわしい名前を作ったと思います。
