Story No.41(中級No.11)
Cherry Blossoms
  • Did you go to see the cherry blossoms yet?
  • No, not yet. It was a very warm winter this year, though, so they might blossom earlier than usual.
  • That's what it looks like. I remember the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. They were so wonderful.
  • Oh, Mr. Thomas, you've been to Washington, D.C.?
  • Yes. There was a branch around there. Speaking of cherry trees, have you heard of Thomas Jefferson? The third president of the U.S.? Well, there's a memorial to him with a big pond, and at the edge of pond, there are many beautiful cherry trees.
  • Wow, sounds pretty! But are there cherry trees in U.S.?
  • Uh-huh. I don't know the exact details, but I heard the trees were sent by the Japanese government to promote good relations between Japan and the U.S.
  • Huh, from Japan?
  • Yes, I remember at the pond there were about 300 trees or so and the color of each flower was slightly different. Some flowers were white, and some were bright or dark pink. There were different shades even on the same tree.
